Our Stance on Racism and Diversity
Recent events in the USA and around the world have highlighted systemic racism and social injustices that exist in our society, propelling the Black Lives Matter movement to the forefront. Diversity and inclusion have always been part of PushPULL’s stated values and we stand in solidarity with our Black members in our dance community. As an organization, we wanted to use the time to listen, reflect and learn and to let Instagram and Facebook be filled with the voices of those who most needed to be heard at this time.
At PushPULL, we recognize the deep roots that dance and music have in Black history and culture. These art forms celebrate the culture and experiences of Black people, but have also stemmed from injustices and atrocities that Black people have both historically endured and are presently experiencing. As dancers and performers, it is our duty to acknowledge how oppression and inequalities have developed into the artistic forms of expression that we find joy in today.
We’ve come to realize that we need to work harder to take actionable steps to promote meaningful change. At this time, we are committed to supporting local dance and arts organizations that support Black dancers. As a start, we have donated our community fund to the Collective of Black Artists in Toronto, and the Cultural Arts Studios of Ottawa.
As we look forward to the future of our company, we will continue to reflect on how to become a more socially conscious organization in and outside of our community
